The Role of Media & Socio-Ethical Responsibility - Analyzing Pakistan

Media as it is commonly seen as an emerging power, now-a-days has already been entered in an environment of conflicts and allegations in Pakistan. Allegations or more clearly should I say, the charges of irresponsibility.

Though media is playing a positive role at many places, but at the same time it has many negative aspects too, due to which we are seeing a societal deterioration now-a-days. Day by day, month by month and year to year the societal norms are changing to the extent that we are forgetting our past. Some changes are good, but some of them are devastating for us and for our generations to come.

Following are some briefly described traits of media, due to which the norms & the values of our society are changing rapidly.

1)      Openness of Media:
It is what we can see as an emerging demand of today’s media i.e. freedom of speech. But, does it mean that there should be no supervisory authority or cultural boundary or some kind of media violation policy for them. Is it what it means that they are free to show everything without taking care of people’s beliefs and culture? Is it what is all about freedom of speech? If yes, then we should say “NO” to it. We should reject it and wake up the authorities in that case. Some examples are as follows:

                                                        i.            A week earlier, we all heard and some of us experienced strange incident on three of Country’s leading channels i.e. GEO, ARY and SAMAA TV. All theses channels has played a Qawwali based on Hazrat Ali (R.A) and Hazrat Fatima (R.A) nikah ceremony for three of the worldly couples, which is a disrespect to those religious deities and a heartfelt emotional & spiritual disturbance for all the Muslims living here and around the world. Now, being a citizen of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, shouldn’t they act responsibly in that matter? Shouldn’t they be aware of their socio-ethical responsibility?

ii.            Then another example is that we are seeing censorable content freely on our television screens which is very embarrassing and devastating, especially when we are sitting with our family. Like ads of condoms, hair removing creams, feminine sanitary pads and etc. Also, obscene language is being spoken in some of our TV Shows today. Like Kiran Khan (Model) said on Shaista Wahidi’s morning show “Hum larkiyan na hoti toh larkon ki pyas kaun bhujata”, Mathira (Model & Actress) spilling obscenity all around the TV. Apna Channel showing bikini shoots of Indian models. Hum TV and other channels showing dramas with too bold stories openly like “Muhabbat Jaye Bhar Main”, “Ishq Hamari Galiyon Main”, “Main Deewani”, “Bashar Momin”, “Hum Thehray Gunahgar”, “Kitni Girhain Baqi Hain”, “Shab-E-Zindagi”, “Bunty I Love You”, “Zip – Bus Chup” and a lot more. Urdu 1 and Geo Kahani showing Turkish dramas which are an open devastation for our culture. Actresses wearing too bold dresses challenging openly our culture to death. Though some of the shows on different channels are subjective and brought a good societal change like “Zindagi Gulzar Hai”, “Humsafar”, “Dhuwan (PTV)”, “Alpha, Bravo, Charlie”, “Dhoop Kinare”, “Hasb-e-Haal”, “50/50”, “Zaviya (Ashfaq Ahmad Sb)”, “Kaho Pakistan” and many others.

If this is all freedom of speech and authorities like PEMRA, Islamic Ideology Council & Government is not up to any action against them. Then we should change the name of Pakistan, tune out our channels & tune in western channels and kick out our culture to adopt westernization which is already gifted with sexual abuses, lower marital rate, old age homes hence less family life and greater lonely life.

2)      Rationality of Media:
Though media is strengthening day by day, but the rationality of its content is getting a bit questionable. Because, either it is at too much height or either it is too much shadowy, both of which makes it deviating. For example, in TV Dramas, the story sometimes shows too much negativity, like in commonly seen family conflicts; which makes it unrealistic.

Similarly, in this period of social & national turmoil, media should produce development programmes at national level to reduce this societal upheaval e.g. Master Chef, Britain Got Talent, The Apprentice, Tour Guide of Pakistan, Kasuti (Intellectual Quiz Program) and etc. Some programs are already in procession like Master Chef, but there should be more of these programs.

Instead of all this, we are having singing & dancing shows; though it is an industry with full of talent, but we are strongly in need of those professionals & intellects through whom we can bring an industrial revolution for industries far more important than the performing arts.

Then as for the News Channels, it is being irrational of them to speak only about Geo’s mistake, where as ARY & SAMAA did the same and therefore they should also be condemned with Geo. It should be noted here that Team Geo has already apologized for their Qawwali act, where as ARY & SAMAA Teams did not have shown any apology, instead they are part of those who are puking at Geo’s act, which shows a complete irrationality on their part. Also, please be mindful here that it is not about defending Geo, but to realize Media’s role in playing with our minds showing only one side of picture to make us believe it as a whole picture.

3)      Balance of Communication:
The most important thing for a socio-ethical media is its balanced communication i.e. neutrality of media, its personnel’s and obviously its content, especially for a journalist.

Despite of its affiliations, it should be able to point out wrongs & rights of a subject which is being observed by them, even if its affiliated member has some errors in it.

More precisely, what I meant here is that a TV Host or journalist should present both sides of picture without any further emphasis on any single side. For example; we have seen TV Shows on freedom of education in which TV anchors present a picture giving an idea of a deprived society; whereas there are so many educational reforms running all across Pakistan like “Teach for Pakistan”, “Danish School”, “Read Foundation”, “Agha Khan Rural Support Programme” & etc.

Another example is when TV Shows sometimes present a picture in which people of some specified area are not given their rights; like commonly shown issue of Baluchistan. Whereas they have been blessed with Sui Gas & further they are having royalty from government. Also, they have the priceless Gwadar Port & City. Then they have fish exports (Shark Fins), Makran Coastal Highway, Recodec (The Treasure Chest), Coal Power Projects, Juniper Forest of Ziarat (One of the World’s Oldest), great tourist spots and many other things.

Then another example is when on TV screens and in other media channels suppression of women is shown at height, whereas now-a-days much of the work is already done on women empowerment and for that girls are given equal rights in education, in serving the country through defense forces and civil & private service.

One more example is, when on TV screens we are seeing news of Bomb Blasts and right on the next channel there is a fashion show or some kind of fun making show killing our humanity & our socio-ethical norms. This shows how unbalanced our media is and how less socio-ethically responsible it is.

The last example is when TV Anchors probe people (politicians, analysts, actors & actresses and/or civilians) or societal issues. One such program in my memory is that where an Investigative Journalist is probing an issue of a price hike in Khairpur by pointing out some vegetables like Tomatoes & Onions. Whereas if we probe the reality, we will came to know that both of the vegetables are not grown in Khairpur and therefore they’ve been transported from other cities. This obviously adds up the transportation cost including labor, fuel & packing costs. That is why these vegetables get on a price hike and similarly this goes on with other things too. One of the main factors behind this price hike is the increasing price hike of fuel, which has not been probed by these media channels, hence resulting in an unbalanced medium of communication.

This is all I got to say this time and being a common man, the whole of this article is written in somewhat layman style. Hope the theme and context of this article will be focused more than its wording by the readers.

May we all be blessed in all ways always. Ameen Sumameen

On Love & Affection

Improvising Pakistan - A Call for United Rehabilitation Effort (Part 02)

In the first part of this article, I have tried to let my dear Pakistanis know the historic unity of Pakistan. I know there are some separatists movements being in action before the inception of Pakistan and sadly they are right now residing in this Islamic Republic of Pakistan. But, right now I'm not here to discuss those ignorant instead, I'm opting myself as a somewhat responsible Pakistani Patriot to provide my people and statesmen with suggestions to improve the conditions of My Dear Motherland Pakistan.

PUNJAB:
An agriculturally gifted land with lots of crops that are circulated around the country to provide other Pakistani Brothers and Sisters with food and grain. Also, it is the largest industrial hub of Pakistan containing many Small, Medium and Large companies in various fields. Also, being a heritage land it generates a handsome tourism revenue.

SINDH:
A culturally rich land with a remarkable extent of seafood capacity, being connected with the only sea route in the region "The Arabian Sea". Also, there are industrial hubs of different descents  supporting the regions economy.

PAKHTUNKHWA:
A land that needs no introduction to its people's valor and rich culture. Its beautiful plateaus, scenic mountain views and northern valleys are the largest tourist attractions of the country. Also, dry fruit is the main commodity being produced in this land. The regions trade routes are the most famous and most historical.

BALUCHISTAN:
A land gifted with largest mineral resources of the country. Also, there are many scenic tourist attractions unexplored in the area with an opportunistic natural seaport under consideration.

AZAD-KASHMIR:
Another picturesque landscape offering tourism & rich food culture to the people of the land and foreign tourist expeditions.

All of this that has been elaborated above is to let my people know what gifts we have incurred from God - Almighty. Now, comes the point that how can we start a Unified Rehabilitation Effort for the improvisation of Dear Motherland Pakistan. From the above detailed scenario we can get the following areas which can help us all in reconditioning the State of Pakistan for prosperous future.
  1. Sharing the Agricultural Progress by implementing green housing techniques to soil the seeds of one province in all other provinces
  2. Conversion of Historical Buildings in Hotels and Restaurants
  3. Promoting Greater Tourism in all regions by providing greater opportunities for facilitators (Tuck Shops, Equipment Stores, Antique Shops and Souvenirs' Shops)
  4. Exploring New Tourist Locations
  5. Deciding the Royalties for Tourist Sites which are part of some Leader of a Clan's property, like in Baluchistan and KPK
  6. Exploration of Mineral Resources
  7. Encouraging local investors more than foreign investors in all business sectors by allowing them subsidies and rebates
  8. Establishing Equal quota of Government Jobs for all provinces by ending the discriminatory division of it on population basis
  9. Building more academic centers and institutions with multilingual support
  10. Reinforcing new industrial hubs all across Pakistan on equal terms and opportunities
  11. Upbringing & reinforcing skills and capabilities of people from every caste & creed in rehabilitation effort for the socioeconomic progress of Pakistan
  12. Forming centers for the Confidence Building Measures across the country
The list of things to do is huge, but to me the foremost duties are listed above on the part of Governments. I hope the government officials will look into this post and at-least consider it as a generous effort for unified rehabilitation. Being an Individual and citizen of Pakistan, we should also come forward to employ our skills & capabilities to make Our Dear Motherland Prosper. We should also end our prejudiced thoughts and show respect to others. That is all what I can say right now and hope my people along with the statesmen will surely not just listen to it, but also do so.

Improvising Pakistan - A Call for United Rehabilitation Effort (Part 01)

Its hard to start, but still I have to begin with the very needed point of view for the Great United Rehabilitation Effort for our very own Dear Motherland Pakistan. Today, we are in a state of economic discomfort, social discrimination, cultural turmoil and a severe lack of unified national growth. Its obvious that a normal person or a reader would put all this on the shoulders of the politicians of the state. Yes, they are responsible for all this fuss which is being created, but are we forgetting ourselves. Aren't we responsible for this inequality or what I should say more appropriately prejudice.

Lets for a moment forget our politicians & bureaucrats and analyze ourselves. In our daily lives we always try to score our own points on the basis of caste and creed. For example, a Punjabi always try to project that everything is on Punjab's shoulders by providing food grain, utility bills (at the most) and production of various necessities to the other provinces. A Pashtun always try to elaborate his' ethnic nation's bravery and hardworking capability to score his' ethnic orientation's score. A Sindhi always try to score his' points by elaborating his' land's cultural and historical values. A Baloch always try to speak out for inappropriate treatment they have  from government of Pakistan and other nations surviving in this country also do so like these major ethnic origins.

Why can't we understand that all of us are first and fore mostly Pakistanis, despite of whatever ethnicity we are currently holding. Why can't we think of origins other than us in this state of Pakistan.
  • Is it that Being a Punjabi is better or bigger than Being a Pakistani?
  • Is it that Being a Pashtun is better or bigger than Being a Pakistani?
  • Is it that Being a Sindhi is better or bigger than Being a Pakistani?
  • Is it that Being a Baloch is better or bigger than Being a Pakistani?
  • Is it that Being a Kashmiri is better or bigger than Being a Pakistani?
  • Is it that Being a Hazarvi is better or bigger than Being a Pakistani?
  • Is it that Being an Urdu Speaking is better or bigger than Being a Pakistani?
  • Is it that Being an Bengali is better or bigger than Being a Pakistani?
  • Is it that Being a Baruhi is better or bigger than Being a Pakistani?
  • Is it that Being a Gilgit-Baltisitani is better or bigger than Being a Pakistani?
The answer to these questions should be "NO" for every Pakistani, no matter what ethnic origin he/she belongs to. In every situation we should think on a whole for all Pakistanis. We should fight for the rights of Nation as a whole, not on the basis of ethnicity. We should end this prejudiced thought living in us.

Day by Day we are getting close minded by thinking only for us. Aren't we forgetting something told to us by our elders i.e. Unity is Strength. Did we just forget the great "Independence Movement" for the creation of Dear Motherland Pakistan. A movement which has people from every caste & creed. The leader of the movement was an Urdu Speaking (Qauid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah), The great thinker of the movement was a Punjabi (Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal), another notable leader was a Punjabi (Ch. Rehmat Ali), another notable leader was a Bengali (Khawaja Nazimudin), another notable leader was a Bengali (Hussain Shaheed Suharwardy), another notable leader was a Pashtun (Sardar Abdur Rab Nishter), another notable leader was a Pashtun (Khan Bakht Jamal Khan), another notable leader was from Balochistan (Qazi Muhammad Essa), another notable leader was from Balochistan (Shahzada Rehmatullah Khan Saddozai), another notable leader was from Sindh (Jan Muhammad Junejo), another notable leader was from Sindh (Abdullah Haroon), another notable leader was an Urdu Speaking (Nawab Viqar-ul-Mulk), another notable leader was from Hazarvi Origin (Jalal-ud-din Jalal Baba) and many others from different ethnic origins of our Dear Motherland Pakistan.

Also, on religious grounds the movement has people like "Jogendra Nath Mandal" a Hindu,
"Sir Victor Turner" & "Alvin Robert Cornelius" were Christians
, "Syed Mir Hassan - Shams ul Ulema" & "Syed Shamsul Hassan" were Sayyids, "Pir Jamaat Ali Shah Sb" a Sunni, "Raja Sahab Mahmood Abadi" a Shia, "Sir Aga Khan 3" an Ismaili, "Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi" a Deobandi and "Ghulam Ahmed Pervez" a Barelvi too participated in the Independence Movement of Pakistan.

All this which I had described above, clearly states that Pakistan is a state developed with a mutual consent & efforts of all ethnic & religious groups. Now, seeing the conditions of present day Pakistan, a question in mind arises that why are we facing this clash of cultures & origins. Aren't there any brotherhood calls or aren't there any unified progression efforts? Yes, there are calls for Unified Growth Policies & Movements, but sadly we don't take part in them to keep our prejudiced thoughts for our personal gains. Today, our personal gains are more important than what is in best interest of our Dear Motherland Pakistan.

Should there be a National Policy for Rehabilitation of Unified Economic Growth or should there be an effort on individual basis. The answer to this would most probably be the responsibility on both sides. But, what should comes first in implementation? And this is something on the part of Governments. (To Be Continued....)

MEDIA - The Growling Pain

Introduction & Background -

Centuries ago, people were introduced with a power, an opportunity to get updates on affairs, activities and traits of the world around them. The world started to recognize the power as medium of information spread out, hence naming it media.

Slowly but steadily media advances with the passage of time and new sources of information spread out were discovered. Starting from simple paper form, its journey continues to filmography. A point in time comes, when this pure source of social service was being converted into business & income generation. Big time investors started taking interest in using media as a source of income generation. Initially, people with learned minds came to the front and started projecting their culture to the world. Promoting their talents to the height of excellence, they eventually started digging the new ideas out, regardless of what it matters to somebody at perceiving end. It is then, it started losing its righteousness and it fell in the hands of strategists to develop business reforms for their own benefit and sake.

Media Today -

Today the journey of the media comes to the point, where multiple sources of information spread out are in use. Besides print & electronic media, people have now another category i.e; web/internet media commonly called as social media. Things are getting more & more advance, without boundaries giving limitless scope of information sharing to the people. People started sharing everything they found amusing & interesting. No matter, what impression it may have on the perceiving end, we are sharing every single bit of life on that media. Everybody has been given a right to express his thoughts and views, just as I am doing it right now. Whether its is one's love or aggression or whether its is one's amusement or sadness, its being shared on this media.

Effects and Some Questions -

It has both effects, positive as well as negative on the lives of many. The could be positive effect is freedom of speech and the could be negative effect is freedom of speech. The reason why I'm using "Freedom of Speech" for both effects is to pose some questions on sharing & discussion ethics of people, not to ban or restrict This Major Human Right.
  1. Do we care what an impression it could have?
  2. Did we just aroused hatred & agony or we have served the humanity with some facts?
  3. Did we just tried to impose our own views on somebody, regardless of his/her own views & beliefs? OR we have given them a chance to think over it?
  4. Did we tried to hide some true facts just to promote our own views?
  5. What would be the effect of our own approach on people of other different views and culture?
  6. Did we brought some good change or we have just ruined the centuries old "Golden Culture"?
  7. Did we just tried to ruin some religious' deity's (Prophet, Their Companion, Imam, Priest, Scholar or some Holy Place) respect to struck a war of hatred, racism and satanism?

Summary -

We might have gone through these questions before but, let us revise these questions and answer them with a little more social and ethical responsibility. The responsibility which is an eternal duty of mankind since its inception. Culture to culture, nation to nation it may differ according to their values, but universal law of social ethics are still there and needs an understanding. Understanding for socio-ethical reforms, for cultural rights protection and for societal harmonization.

It is all what we can summarize in one sentence as "Knowing Your Limits". A process which is a very need of our today's world to bring harmony, to stop cultural abduction and to create a universal society, where eternal law of respect, peace & love propogates.

Don't just start doing at once what you have read, instead let yourself think over it, do some brainstorming and let yourself be more contextual than just a researcher.

May we all be in Good Faith, Good Health and in Good Terms. Ameen Sumameen

A Great Divide | Nationalism at the Verge of Partiism

NOTE: This article is not fully or even in any case partially discriminated. So, please don't get bothered of the words and sentences used in this article. Stay happy, stay calm and stay blessed.

Walking through the history of sub-continent Indo-Pak, when there was no sign of a nation called Pakistan. An era of dark British Rule, when people of the land were pushed down to less resources, low-level jobs and a low-class life. When Muslims of the land boycotted all government resources, including the main source of light "EDUCATION". Day by day British Oppression was getting stronger & stronger, diffusing all the resources specifically for Muslims.

The Hindus of the land were getting resources and some of them were even getting high rank jobs due to the source of light and hope "EDUCATION".

Then a noble Muslim stood up against all the odds of time to end this ruthless slavery and boycott. He posed a challenge to ruthless & biased british rulers and Muslim clerics. He was threatened to be declared as a Non-Muslim but, he didn't stopped. He had a vision of an educated, prosperous and a strong Muslim Nation. He wanted Muslims to stand in the feet of their forefathers, he wanted them to hold their true culture of literacy tightly, he wanted them to be dignified and united. He was none other than "Sir Syed Ahmad Khan" who started the struggle for a prosperous nation. He pulled out Muslims of the sub-continent from the dark shadows of religious human idolatry to end the boycott started by religious Muslim clerics. He propagated the vision of one unified, prosperous and educated Muslim Nation in sub-continent. This was the start of building a nation called Pakistan, where Muslims of the sub-continent can live freely, they can have access to every resource, where they have dignity & pride and where they can have unified rights.
This unified struggle continued to the time when leaders like Qauid-e-Azam, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Liaqaut Ali Khan, Chaudhary Rehmat Ali, Mualana Muhammad Ali & Shaukat Ali Jauhar and other notable leaders took charge of building a stronger & prosperous Pakistan. Their move lead millions of Muslims to struggle for a Muslim sovereign state in the light of nationalism. The nationalists marched towards the completion of their historic vision of a free land, a sovereign state named as Pakistan by one of our great leader Chaudhary Rehmat Ali. A time when the nationalists were united as one Pakistani Nation. When nobody was punjabi, nobody was pakhtun, nobody was baluchi, nobody was sindhi, nobody was kashmiri, nobody was hazarvi, nobody was urdu speaking (caste), nobody was caste or ethnicity oriented...... They all were Just Pakistanis, They all were pure nationalists and that is why they all were a part of single unified nation called PAKISTAN. Everybody of them left behind their ethnic identity just for the sake of a Proud, Sovereign and Unified Identity PAKISTAN.

Now it has been 66 years that have been passed away since we got our independence and we are sadly seeing a destructive wave of partiism ending or in better words demolishing our proud Nationalism. Now we are seeing a political war, a political differentiation dividing this proud unified land into different geographical/ethnic identities. We and our so-called patriotic political leaders aired a wave of ruthless party base and geographical differentiation. Now we are more of a separatist than a Nationalist, we are becoming animals pet by our politicians and we are transforming ourselves into puppets being controlled by some pathetic politicians.

Where the hell are nationalists, where are the proud Pakistanis? Isn't just a label for us, now? Why can't we think for a positive, prosperous and stronger change for the Nationalist Revolt. Its not the fate of Pakistan, but its the result of our blind folded deeds that are making it worst ever. We always try to support and justify our parties, but never try to stood up only for Pakistan.

We should deem it as our dearest mother and should stood up for its love & affection that it needed. But, we are busy in giving foul names to each other in accordance with political parties and geographic boundaries, but thinking & caring for Pakistan as a whole one unified nation didn't stand a chance among us. Are we still Pakistanis anymore or not? Are we united anymore or not? Are we a Nation anymore or not? Is it that much needed to follow a political party for the betterment or to show the love of our dear Motherland - PAKISTAN? Can't we on our own work for the betterment of our God Gifted Land?

Our motherland is waiting to see the love of its Nation, not only when an issue against it arises, but all the time. It is dying in the empty hands of fake nationalists. Today it is being neglected by partiism, mindless party supporters, disguised separatists and ruthless political leaders. Today it is in need of unification, inter-country Confidence Building Measures and Need & Priority based Nationalists Solutions (e.g. Kala Bagh Dam, Thar Coal Project, Baluchistan Package in its true sense, Agricultural & Industrial Revolt and Priority Rights of Minorities) across all provinces and many other differences.

Please give at-least a moment to our motherland with a thought of countriism (Pure Unified Nationalism) and leave partiism far behind it. Don't think you can't do things alone, but think you can do it for the love of our Motherland - Pakistan. We are its power, not our political parties. Please for the love of PAKISTAN, end this ruthless Great Divide of partiism and ethnic differentiation. This divide is not the purpose of Pakistan nor its for our unity. Its for political parties to market their slogans to get the chance of ruling Pakistan. The struggle and formation of Pakistan is for us to build a lovely, lively, prosperous and united Pakistan.

Live for PAKISTAN or Live for Your Political Party
Its Your Choice
But, Then Don't Blame Anybody for Severity in Pakistan
